HOW TO CONTACT THE BOARD OF EDUCATION

IN WRITING:

If a letter is written to the Board of Education, the correspondence is sent to each member.  The receipt of that correspondence is reported to the public at the next public Board of Education meeting.  All correspondence must contain the full name and address of the sender.

The public is welcome to attend the meeting and if further information is necessary or required, anyone who wishes is free to speak under the “Public Comment” portion on the agenda.  This procedure is in effect if one writes to the Board via US Mail to 111 Atlantic Avenue, Lynbrook, NY 11563 and to the attention of the Board of Education.  One may also wish to e-mail the Board of Education at boe@lynbrook.k12.ny.us.

If the correspondence requires a specific answer(s) to questions posed, please note that the Board of Education meets as a governing body only once per month.  Therefore, no response can be given until the entire Board can meet and discuss the issue presented.  When appropriate, the Board will provide a written response.

BY PUBLIC VERBAL COMMENT:

Members of the public are welcome to speak to the Board of Education each month under the agenda item identified as “Public Comment.”  Please see the schedule of meetings dates located on the district website under the Board of Education section.  Each person is asked to state his/her name and if he/she is a resident.  It is important to note that no matters of personnel or specific student issues are able to be discussed in public.  Once a particular staff member’s name or student’s name is mentioned, it will be necessary for the Board of Education to end the conversation.  In the essence of time, the Board may also end a discussion if repetitive comments on the same topic have been clearly understood.

If your concern centers on the day-to-day operation, it is important to note that the proper protocol is to speak with your child’s individual teacher first, then building principal to work on finding a solution to a particular problem.  Many matters can be resolved in that fashion.
