CHESS CHAMPIONS
North Middle School sixth-grader Alexandra Spector pulled off an impressive second-place finish in the girls scholastic division of the Long Island Chess Nut Spring Regional Tournament on March 25. In addition, the boys team took a third-place trophy in the junior high/high school division. A total of 18 North Middle "chess owls" participated in the tournament.
The Chess Club, introduced this year, has more than 40 members. Students attend weekly meetings to play chess and learn strategies from teacher Daniel Seid, who is the club advisor. Each meeting starts off with a 15-minute lesson on strategy, skills, gambits and plays, followed by 30 minutes of tournament style games.
