Working Together
The Board believes that complaints are handled best when resolved as close to their origins as possible. School personnel should be given every opportunity to consider the issues and to resolve the problem. Therefore, please follow the proper channeling of complaints as listed below.

The Teacher:  If you have a concern or complaint about something in the classroom, you are asked to meet with the teacher first.

The Principal: If your concern is about general school operations and policies, or if meeting with a teacher is either inappropriate or does not help, then you are encouraged to meet with the school principal.

The Superintendent: If your concern involves school district operations generally, or if the teacher and principal are not able to resolve your problem, please contact the Superintendent for an appointment.

The Board of Education: If your concern is directly related to Board actions or operations, you may address the Board directly or contact the Superintendent. If you have a complaint and you have made an attempt to solve the matter at other levels and have not been satisfied with the response(s), your complaint may be brought to the attention of the Board.

Contact the Board of Education

IN WRITING:
If a letter is written to the Board of Education, the correspondence is sent to each member. All correspondence must contain the full name and address of the sender. If the correspondence requires a specific answer(s) to questions posed, please note that the Board of Education meets as a governing body only once per month. Therefore, no response can be given until the entire Board can meet to discuss the issue presented. When appropriate, the Board will provide a written response.

Oftentimes, the issue is more appropriate for a district employee such as a student’s teacher or a building principal. Unless your issue is in regard to a Board Policy or a budgetary concern, please contact the appropriate district employee before contacting the board.
If your concern centers on the day-to-day operation, it is important to note that the proper protocol is to speak with your child’s individual teacher first, then building principal to work on finding a solution to a particular problem. Many matters can be resolved in that fashion.

Members of the public are welcome to speak to the Board of Education each month under the agenda item identified as “Public Comment.” Please see the schedule of meetings dates located on the district website under the Board of Education section. Each person is asked to state his/her name and if he/she is a resident. It is important to note that no matters of personnel or specific student issues are able to be discussed in public. Once a particular staff member’s name or student’s name is mentioned, it will be necessary for the Board of Education to end the conversation. In the essence of time, the Board may also end a discussion if repetitive comments on the same topic have been clearly understood.

If you would still like to contact the Board of Education, please email them at: BOE@lynbrookschools.org or send a letter via US Mail to 111 Atlantic Avenue, Lynbrook, NY 11563 to the attention of the Board of Education.
