In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, students at North Middle School in the Lynbrook School District established a library of social-emotional literature in the school’s Wellness Room.
Over the past few months, students have met with English teacher Katelyn Schwecherl and Spanish teacher James Wolf on Wednesday mornings to catalogue, label, review and stage a mini lending library for students, now dubbed the Social-Emotional Lending Library. Found within the Guidance Suite’s Wellness Room, books are organized by topic and reviewed by students to help provide middle school readers with narratives that touch on the middle school experience. The SEL library includes more than 75 titles in English and Spanish on diverse topics such as friendship and family, anxiety, neurodiversity and cultural identity. The SEL Library was created for all students in the hope that good literature can help students take solace and inspiration from characters who have experiences, struggles and dreams just like they do.
