LHS Science and Art Departments collaborate for innovative workshop

Students in Mr. Zaccaro’s Anatomy class at Lynbrook High School recently took part in a unique interdisciplinary workshop titled “From Anatomy to Art: The Skull as Study.” The collaboration brought together the sciences and the arts, as students applied their anatomical knowledge of the human skull through the lens of observational drawing.
After studying the structure and function of the skull in class, Mr. Zaccaro partnered with high school art teacher Mr. Sena, who joined the class for a two-day push-in workshop. Mr. Sena guided students through a series of drawing exercises designed to help them understand form, proportion and structure in a visual and tactile way. Students learned how to break down the complex anatomy of the skull into simple shapes and lines, developing an artistic approach to studying the very forms they had analyzed scientifically.
During the workshop, students experimented with a range of techniques — including strong-hand and opposite-hand drawings, blind contour studies and observational sketching. These exercises encouraged creative thinking, fine motor development and a deeper connection between visual observation and anatomical understanding.
This collaboration was inspired by Lynbrook School District’s Professional Learning Community (PLC) initiative. Both Mr. Sena and Mr. Zaccaro participated in the PLC session “Art Related to Teaching,” led by Mr. Lentini and Mr. Kunz. During this training, teachers explored strategies to integrate art across disciplines, recognizing that artistic practices can strengthen comprehension, retention and critical thinking in subjects like science.
By merging the analytical nature of anatomy with the expressive process of art, students not only reinforced their understanding of skeletal structure but also gained a new appreciation for the beauty and complexity of the human body. The project stands as a testament to Lynbrook’s commitment to innovative, cross-curricular learning experiences that engage students on multiple levels. #OwlProud #OwlLearns
