Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) SCOPE Before & After School Child Care Program
Lynbrook School District – 2026-2027 School Year
The Lynbrook School District is pleased to partner with SCOPE Education Services to provide before and after school child care programs beginning in Fall 2026 for elementary students.
SCOPE is a not-for-profit organization that has served Long Island school districts since 1964. All SCOPE programs are licensed by the New York State Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS).
General Program Information

SCOPE provides supervised before and after school child care in a safe, structured, and engaging environment. Programs include a balance of homework support, recreation, enrichment activities, socialization, and free-choice activities.
Daily activities may include:
- Homework and reading time
- STEAM activities
- Arts and crafts
- Outdoor play and gym activities
- Literacy activities
- Club days and themed activities
- Recreational games and sports
- Quiet activities and social time

The program is open to all elementary students in the Lynbrook School District in grades K–5.

Yes. The SCOPE child care program will begin in Fall 2026 and continue through the 2026–2027 school year.

SCOPE anticipates offering a Summer 2027 child care program at a rate of $245 per week. Additional information regarding summer programming will be shared at a later date.
Program Hours & Locations

Before School Program
- 7:00 AM until the start of school
After School Program
- School dismissal until 6:30 PM

- Kindergarten Center
- Marion Street School
- Waverly Park School
- West End School
Programs may utilize school spaces such as:
- All-purpose rooms
- Gyms
- Playgrounds
- Cafeteria/common areas

No. Students will be grouped appropriately by age and grade level whenever possible, in accordance with OCFS regulations, staffing ratios, available space, and enrollment.
Daily Schedule & Activities

Students will participate in a structured daily routine that includes:
- Snack time
- Homework/reading time
- Outdoor recess or gym activities
- STEAM and enrichment activities
- Arts and crafts
- Literacy activities
- Recreational games
- Social interaction with peers

A typical PM schedule may include:
- Arrival and handwashing
- Snack and group discussion time
- Homework and reading time
- Outdoor recess or gym activities
- STEAM or themed enrichment activities
- Literacy and club activities
- Free-choice activities later in the afternoon
Specific schedules may vary slightly by school and age group.

The program includes a minimum of 40 minutes of supervised homework, study, and reading time each day.
While staff provide support and supervision, parents should continue to review completed homework at home.

Yes. Students will have opportunities for supervised free-choice activities, particularly later in the afternoon. Examples include:
- Board games
- Coloring
- Toys and manipulatives
- Quiet social activities

Yes. SCOPE incorporates enrichment opportunities and themed activities throughout the program, including:

Playground & Outdoor Activities

Yes, weather permitting, students will have outdoor play opportunities.
However, playground use is governed by school safety and liability protocols. If the playground is simultaneously being used by non-SCOPE students or families, SCOPE students may not be permitted to use the area at that time. This is a supervision and liability requirement, not a program-specific rule.
Registration & Scheduling

Registration begins: Monday, May 18, 2026 at 6:00 AM
Registration is completed online through the SCOPE registration portal.

Families may register online through the SCOPE website:
New families must first create an online account before submitting a registration contract.
Enrollment is first come, first served and space is limited.

Families are encouraged to register as early as possible. SCOPE offers both full-time and part-time scheduling options, and additional scheduling guidance will be available through SCOPE directly.

Yes. SCOPE offers:
- Full-time consistent schedules
- Part-time “Pick Your Days” schedules
- Reduced tuition and as-needed scheduling support in certain situations
Part-time students must attend a minimum of five days per month.
Families needing flexibility are encouraged to communicate directly with SCOPE regarding scheduling needs and availability.

Yes. The “Pick Your Days” option allows families to select specific attendance days each month, subject to space availability and program policies.

SCOPE offers part-time scheduling options and reduced tuition “as needed” support in some situations. Information regarding drop-in card usage and procedures will be provided directly by SCOPE as registration approaches.
Availability for drop-in care may depend on staffing and site capacity.

If additional demand exists, SCOPE and the District will monitor enrollment closely and evaluate options to expand staffing and capacity where feasible.
Program Costs & Financial Assistance

- Additional days over 5: $15/day
After School (Dismissal – 6:30 PM)
- Full-Time: $412/month
- Part-Time:

- Additional days over 5: $24.20/day
Combined AM/PM Full-Time

The District and SCOPE recognize the importance of affordability and financial assistance options are available for eligible families.

The District understands that program affordability is important to families and recognizes that costs may differ from prior providers. The District and SCOPE are committed to providing a high-quality, licensed child care program with trained staff, structured programming, safety compliance, and financial assistance opportunities for eligible families.
Staffing & Supervision

Whenever possible, SCOPE strives to provide consistency in staffing. Some staff members may work both AM and PM sessions, although staffing assignments may vary based on scheduling and enrollment needs.

All SCOPE staff:
- Complete background checks
- Meet OCFS staffing qualifications
- Receive CPR, AED, First Aid, and Medication Administration Training (MAT)
- Participate in ongoing professional development
Programs maintain a maximum staff-to-student ratio of 1:10.
Student Expectations & Safety

No. Students are not permitted to use phones or smartwatches during the program.

If a child becomes ill:
- They will be supervised separately from other students
- Parents/guardians will be contacted for pickup
- Staff trained in First Aid, CPR/AED, and Medication Administration will respond as needed

Children must be signed out daily by:
- A parent/guardian, or
- An authorized adult age 18 or older
Photo identification is required.
Special Education & Additional Student Needs

The program is open to eligible students in accordance with SCOPE program guidelines and staffing capabilities. Families of students with specific support needs are encouraged to contact SCOPE directly to discuss accommodations and program participation.

At this time, the program is designed primarily for elementary-aged students. Families with questions regarding older students or students with specialized needs are encouraged to contact SCOPE directly to discuss potential options and supports.
