Lynbrook’s innovative, inventive and standards based Art program is exclusively taught by certified art teachers. At the kindergarten and elementary level, focus is on the fundamental concepts of art instruction; introducing children to the materials and techniques necessary to begin their artistic journey and includes the basic elements and principles of art and design, art history, aesthetics, and art criticism.  
 

As students move to the middle school their individual creativity is nurtured even more so, as their exposure to increasingly advanced concepts and techniques is incorporated into the curriculum base. The introduction, investigation and experimentation with a broader variety of mediums is a key element in this process. Both historical and popular culture are explored and its societal impact and influences, allowing our young adolescents to have a clearer understanding of art’s historical significance and future implications. An important component of our middle school program allows students who show serious interest and advanced ability to take an accelerated Studio in Art class in the eighth grade. This class involves the fundamental principles common to all art structures, the concepts of art technique and personal expression in various media.  

 Whether an aspiring professional intending on pursuing a career or one who is satisfying their passion for artistic creation, the Lynbrook High School art program provides a course of study for all who are inspired by the visual arts. Commencing with Studio in Art which emphasizes and explores more traditional artistic approaches or Digital Design for those more adept and interested in computer applications, the art program subsequently offers classes in Studio in Drawing & Painting, where self-expression and creativity within two-dimensional art is stressed while strengthening the student’s technique in drawing and painting. The digital camera, combined with the understanding of the effects of light, film, paper, lenses and special effects, is examined in Photo Illustration along with the use of Photoshop software where students manipulate their photographic materials on the computer in order to achieve a variety of technical effects. An in-depth exposure to art for the serious student emphasizing three-dimensional renderings is the basis for Advanced Drawing & Painting while Printmaking/Sculpture involves two-dimensional imagery produced in multiple prints followed by the creative aspects of sculpting using a variety of media including wire and plaster. Graphic Design is a computer-aided design course in which the skillful combining of images and text constitutes the curriculum’s core elements. Portfolio Preparation/Art in Context is for the senior student who must prepare a comprehensive portfolio of artwork for college admissions combined with a hands-on seminar wherein students tackle college level art challenges and study traditional techniques based on art history eras. Finally, the rigorous AP Studio Art is for students seriously interested in the practical experience of art, with the expectation they will augment their classroom work outside of the classroom environment.  With the guidance of a supportive and exceptional staff, Lynbrook High School’s art students continue to gain acceptance into the country’s top art schools and continue to set records year after year in both number and monetary amounts of scholarships earned.
