Through whole-group instruction and station teaching, fourth grade uses Great Minds Eureka Math as the core curriculum to deliver instruction. The major fourth grade instructional focuses are:

1. developing understanding and fluency with multidigit multiplication, and developing understanding of dividing to find quotients involving multi-digit dividends
2. developing an understanding of fraction equivalence, addition and subtraction of fractions with like denominators, and multiplication of fractions by whole numbers
3. understanding that geometric figures can be analyzed and classified based on their properties, such as having parallel sides, perpendicular sides, particular angle measures, and symmetry

Fourth grade uses a variety of modules and units of study to explore the features of different fiction and informational genres.

Interpreting Characters: Through the mentor text The Tiger Rising, students follow the characters through the arc of the story, noticing their actions and motives and looking for repeated details to interpret their significance.

Historical Fiction Book Clubs: Through the mentor text Number the Stars, students focus on how the setting has a direct impact on the problem and solution of the story. Students trace the characters' journeys and the historical timeline to discover universal themes.

Poetry: Through the mentor text Love That Dog, students study the literary elements of poetry while interpreting figurative language's deeper meaning. They do this while following a story structure with characters, setting, problems, solutions, and theme.

Reading the Weather, Reading the World: This informational unit on extreme weather builds students' content knowledge as students form research clubs and present in a variety of formats while learning about text features and structure to deliver factual information.

Fourth grade builds on third grade work on morphology and continues it with Morpheme Magic. This program supports students' vocabulary and spelling knowledge as they study prefixes, base words, and suffixes and develop an understanding of how meaningful word parts contribute to word meaning and structure.

Fourth grade uses units of study to write narrative, opinion, and informational pieces. Fourth graders also write about their reading through a Literary Essay, where students make a claim (or answer a question) about a text and support their claim with evidence and details across texts. Teachers use The Writing Revolution (opens in a new tab) approach not only during these writing projects, but across the school day and in all content areas, to support students' development of grammar, conventions, sentence structure, and organization.

Fourth graders study Energy, Electricity and Magnetism, Shaping Our Earth, and Waves, using a combination of resources from OHM BOCES science kits. Students engage in hands-on science labs and investigations, using writing to explain their learning and demonstrate their understanding of scientific concepts.

Using BOCES-created curricula, students develop an understanding of geography, Native Americans, European explorers, Colonial times, and the American Revolution. Students build historical knowledge while developing an understanding of how events and people shaped the nation.

Fourth grade uses a variety of resources to support students' social-emotional development, including RULER. Students receive different levels of support based on their individual needs. Throughout the year, students also participate in cultural contribution activities and explore character traits that promote positive relationships, responsible decision-making, and a strong sense of community.
