Red, white and blue was the theme at each building in the Lynbrook School District on Sept. 11, as students and staff honored the victims and heroes of Sept. 11, 2001, in recognition of Patriot Day.

At West End Elementary School, all students and staff, as well as district administration, Lynbrook Fire Department volunteers and parents, gathered outside the building for a solemn ceremony. The fifth grade chorus gave a performance in honor of first responders, while other students showed tribute through poetry and messages of thanks.

Meanwhile, at Waverly Park Elementary School, students stepped out of their classrooms and joined hands with their peers to form a human chain that spanned the hallways. Before forming the chain, students Jak Kagdis and James Kolm led the schoolwide Pledge of Allegiance.

Additionally, at Lynbrook High School, Principal Matthew Sarosy read the names of alumni and community member first responders who served during the Sept. 11 attacks, honoring their courage and sacrifice and ensuring that their service and memory live on. On television screens throughout the building, interviews with students and family members affected by the tragedy played during the day.

Through these acts of remembrance, the district honors those we lost and those who served, while ensuring that their sacrifices and stories remain a lasting part of the community’s history.
