Music Program

The Lynbrook School District’s Music program has been the recipient of many accolades including top honors at NYSSMA (NY State School Music Association) Festivals year after year and its designation as a multiple “Best Communities for Music Education” honoree by the NAMM Foundation, one of only a very select number of districts nationwide awarded this distinction.

In the elementary schools, music instruction starts as early as second grade where potential orchestral students may opt to attend lunchtime string classes. As they enter third grade, all students may choose to join the band program as well. This wonderful third grade music experience culminates in an afternoon junior concert at each of our elementary schools in the spring.  As these young musicians transition to fourth grade, instruction in all three performance ensembles of band, chorus and orchestra begins. Full band and orchestra rehearsals are held before school, and are coupled with in-school lessons. [Lunchtime] chorus rehearsals also begin at this time. Daytime concerts at each school and evening concerts at the high school are presented in both the winter and spring. All elementary students also receive classroom music instruction at least once per [six-day] cycle.

Our middle school music program is a natural succession for these young musicians with the continuation of these groups now divided into dedicated 6th grade ensembles and progressing into combined 7th and 8th grade band, chorus and orchestras for their final two years at the middle school. All ensembles now meet during the school day with each performing a winter and spring concert at the high school. Music students who have serious interest and ability have additional opportunities at this level as they may audition for advanced ensembles at both North and South Middle; specifically, the Select Chorus, the Jazz Ensemble and the Chamber Orchestra. These select ensembles rehearse before or after school and perform advanced literature at a number of events throughout the year including a dedicated Select Concert at the high school in the spring.

The Lynbrook High School music department continues this outstanding level of instruction with numerous performance ensembles. In the orchestral program, continuing students can be a member of the String and Symphony orchestras as well as various ancillary groups including the Chamber Orchestra and String Quartet. Vocalists can sing in the Mixed Choir, Concert Choir and/or Show Choir, and band students can perform with the Symphonic Band, Marching Band, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble and Brass Choir. The high school music program has competed and performed all along the east coast of the Unities States including Boston, Philadelphia, New York City, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington D.C and at Disneyworld in Orlando, Florida providing music students with unique opportunities and enriching educational experiences. For student who wish to supplement their performance experience with a more in-depth study of musical concepts, the high school program also offers class instruction in Music Theory which introduces these young musicians to the basic elements of music by studying and analyzing melody, harmony, and its related components. Students interested in the theatrical arts can avail themselves of the school’s extra-curricular and fully-staged musical and play productions which provide onstage opportunities as cast members as well as the technical and/or stage crew, set design or playing in the musical’s pit orchestra.

Lynbrook’s art and music students continue to receive many accolades, gain acceptance into prestigious music and art schools and earn many scholarships. Most importantly, our students use their impressive musical and artistic abilities to also enhance their community; supporting and contributing to those in need while acquiring a life-long knowledge, understanding and appreciation for the arts and the impact they can have in society.  Congratulations to the community, the Board of Education, the staff and students of the Lynbrook Public Schools District-wide Art and Music Departments.
